3d to 2d

This is my 3D to 2D assignment. I chose my stacked canyon book to edit. I snapped this picture at the library. In Photoshop I added the smoke coming out of the book and put in an image of the grand canyon in the smoke because the book was designed after the grand canyon. Then I wanted it to be sort of magical so I added the extra smoke in at the bottom. This picture is kind of small, but I uploaded a larger one to flickr for anyone to see it better.

Silhouette

You could almost call this my last project. When I first got the assignment, the idea was to make some type of box, made out of foam core, that will have secret doors which hold an object and drawings. I knew I wanted this project to be pretty personal for me so I used myself as my inspiration.

My main box was my own silhouette. I snapped a picture of myself from the side and did some editing in photoshop to come out with a black silhouette. Then I printed that off fairly large and traced it onto the black foam core.  The tricky part was to make the sides of the box. I cut out strips of the foam core and glued them one at a time along the outline of my silhouette. I used the safety pins to hold a couple of the strips together. Once they all dried and were pretty sturdy, I sawed down the strips to make a slant so the box was not completely flat on top. I had to use my x-acto knife and it was a very time consuming and frustrating process.

For my object, I decided to sculp a brain out of sculpy (even though I am not the best at sculpting), and I would also sculpt wings to glue onto the side of the brain. This was to signify that my brain is free to create. To hide my brain, I cut a hole into my foam core head and made a little hole and then had the top of my head slide up to reveal the brain, and slide back down to hide it.

For my drawings, I wanted to create my thoughts somehow. I drew a skeleton backbone, foot, and hand. I drew them almost like diagrams but instead of diagramming the bones, I diagrammed important things in my life. I diagrammed important people in my life for my backbone. I diagrammed important places I have been, am at now, and am going to in the future for my foot. And for my hand, I diagrammed interesting things about myself. For an extra little twist, I wrote all of the words in Polish. I first did this because my thoughts are secret to me  and I would bet not many people know Polish so it was almost like my own language. I also did it in Polish because I am Polish. I was very happy with how these turned out. I put a little thing drawer on the side to slide the 4x4 drawings into.

Then to cover the bottom I attempted to fill the empty space on the back with pieces of foam core but trying to get them the right size was very challenging and I didn't like the gaps. So what I did was line the entire back with black tape and then cut around the edges and it turned out really nice.

Stack It // Abnormal Book

I was excited to start this stacking project and had an idea from the beginning. Instead of trying to shape each curve of my apple and pear I chose to stack, I decided to make a bunch of circles and then shape them as I glued them. I started with the apple and as the glue started to dry, I noticed that my stacked apple would almost grow. I then had to go back and peel off a few layers and somehow re-glue them back on. I'm glad I learned that in my first object because I knew for the next. My pear turned out a little better and I even tried to sand it down a little to make it more realistic. I just used sand paper and all it really did was flatten the edges of the paper together but it almost looked like skin on the pear.

After stacking our two fruits, we had the task of stacking whatever we wanted into some type of thing. It took me a while to decide what I wanted to do but I finally decided to stack pages of a book. I remembered when I was younger and it amused me that there could be holes in books where people could hide secret stuff so I decided I would recreate that but make it into some type of canyons or mountains. I found a great book at a thrift shop called The Psychology of Abnormal People. I thought it was perfect because only an abnormal person would make such a thing. After a while I got into a rhythm of cutting four or five pieces at a time and things went pretty smoothly. I even created a little middle mountain that fit right into the gap in the middle of the book. I might not of stacked something completely crazy but I was happy with my stacked canyons.

Clay Creations

I have never had experience with clay or sculpting so I was a little anxious about this project. My job was to find two items and sculpt them out of the clay and then we had to make three hybrids from those two objects. I decided to sculpt this weird cable plug thing I found sitting in my living room, and I chose this oversized diamond ring.

Obviously I thought these two objects would be fairly easy and would inspire me to easily create three hybrids. Well, the diamond part of the ring turned out to be very difficult because of the slanted triangles overlapping along the sides of the diamond. The actual ring part of it was a little challenging because the clay had to be thicker than the ring part so it looked a little chunky and strange. In the end, it did look like a giant diamond ring though. Next was the strange cable thing I found. It was pretty fun to sculpt because of the negative space on the bottom of it and the ridges on the tubes on the outside. The middle part had a little hump in it so that was interesting to re-create.

After I got those finished, I needed to start my three hybrids. From the diamond ring I focused on using the triangular shapes and the top shape of the ring. For the cable connecter I used the ridges, screw detail, and negative space. The hybrids were very unique and turned out to be almost playful. They reminded me of something from a Dr. Seuss book.
